THE TRUTH: SOUTH AFRICA WATER CRISIS

Here's something you may not know. Our CEO, Jean Kolloff, started Qi Cashmere 15 years ago and from that Quinn emerged. It was a way for her to create and produce quality garments up to her standards. But not only that, she wanted to give back, give back to others and to the planet. Her goal has always been to make a positive impact on the world and educate people about quality.

Jean spends six months out of each year in our Shanghai office. She visits every factory we work with to make sure they are practicing correct procedures including, but not limited to; creating a safe space to work, using sustainable washing & dyeing procedures, and taking care of their raw material sources. We select each factory we work with extremely carefully.

Her current focus is improving water quality and reducing water. Textile manufacturing can use a lot of energy and a lot of water when not produced sustainably. The water that becomes the run-off from washing our yarn is recycled as irrigation and waste water. This is extremely important as years ago this 'grey water' was polluting the drinking water in China. It had become a major problem in China however, the government has recently enacted a very strict policy regarding the processing of water waste from any manufacturer facilities.

That being said, we feel a huge responsibility to help conserve water for not only China, but Cape Town and the entire world. We feel we must help the citizens of Cape Town, South Africa, immediately. Cape Town is coming close to day zero; having no drinking water available. When this happens, Cape Town residents will have to wait in line, surrounded by armed guards, to buy quality drinking water that will be rationed. We all need to help.

Some things you can do to save water at home and in daily life:

1. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth, the water should not be running when you're not using it.

2. Fix all your leaks! A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of 1 drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year!

3. If your use a dishwasher, scrape your plates clean instead of pre-rinsing your dishes under the tap.

4. Re-use the run-off water, from your sink for things like watering your plants.

5. Take shorter showers.

6. Don't use your toilet as a wastebasket. Throw your facial wipes, tissues in the trash, not the toilet.

7. Wash your clothes less... not only will you save money and water, but your clothes will last longer also. Wait to do laundry until the load is full!

8. If there is just one spot of dirt on a garment, use the spot cleaner. It does not need a full wash.

9. Wash your car using a bucket of water, not a running hose.

10. DO YOUR RESEARCH...find out how your clothes are produced. Shop from other sustainable brands who are taking steps in the right direction to make less impact on the water crisis.

Our cashmere items are sustainably made and organically dyed. Also, the water run-off from washing the yarn is reused in the factory.
